2 Christmas Songs

Percy Grainger (1882-1961)

Clarinet Quartet

2 Christmas Songs by Percy Grainger arranged for clarinet quartet (Cl. 1-3, Bass Cl or Cl. 1-2, Alto Cl, Bass Cl). The two English folk songs included in this arrangement are:

  1. Sussex Mummers’ Christmas Carol – This beautiful, expressive melody was harmonized by Grainger with richly-voiced, wide-spaced chords and interesting inner parts. Though technically not difficult, the tempo is slow and requires good control by all players. Balancing the main melody with the inner voices requires care.
  2. There Was a Pig Went Out to Dig – (also known as “Chrisimas Day in the Morning”) –  An English rhyming song from Lancashire. It was first published in Miss M. H. Mason’s Nursery Rhymes and Country Songs. It’s a bouncy, fun piece that alternates solo lines and group choruses.

With this arrangement you get:

1 Clarinet quartet score, transposed (16pp including cover, 9″ x 12″).

1 set Clarinet quartet parts (4pp each, 9″ x 12″):

  • B-flat Clarinet 1
  • B-flat Clarinet 2
  • B-flat Clarinet 3 (Alto Clarinet Double)
  • Alto Clarinet (Cl. 3 Double)
  • Bass Clarinet

The range for each clarinet part is shown below.
Audio and score excerpts are available above.

An arrangement of 2 Christmas Songs is also available for Saxophone Quartet. As long as parts 1 through 4 are covered, the clarinet and saxophone parts may be played in any combination.
