About the Composer

Joaquín Turina Pérez (9 December 1882 – 14 January 1949) was a Spanish composer and teacher. He helped to establish the national character of 20th-century Spanish music. After studying in Seville and Madrid, Turina went in 1905 to Paris, where he was a pupil of Moritz Moszkowski for piano and Vincent d’Indy for composition. Though he absorbed elements of the French style, he was inspired in Paris by Isaac Albéniz to write distinctively Spanish music.

He returned to Spain in 1913 where he met Manuel de Falla and was further influenced by the prevailing currents of musical nationalism. Study in Paris at the Schola Cantorum was followed, in 1914, by a return to Madrid, where he made his subsequent career, in spite of the difficulties he and many others of his background encountered during the days of the Republic.
