Chrissemas Day in the Morning (1926)
Opus 46, No. 1
Gustav Holst (1874–1934)
SATB Saxophone Quartet
Chrissemas Day in the Morning by Gustav Holst arranged for SATB Saxophone Quartet. If you’re looking for “something different” for your Christmas concert, Holst’s setting of this English rhyming song “There was a pig went out to dig” may be just the thing for you. It is short and very lively. Holst’s trademark modal harmonies are interesting as always. The same tune was set by Percy Grainger and is available here for saxophone quartet or clarinet quartet.
With this arrangement of Chrissemas Day in the Morning you get:
SATB Saxophone Quartet Score, transposed (12pp including covers, 9″ x 12″)
Saxophone parts (each 4pp including covers, 9″ x 12″)
- Soprano Saxophone
- Alto Saxophone
- Tenor Saxophone
- Baritone Saxophone
The range for each saxophone part is shown below.
Audio and score excerpts are available above.

About the Composer
Gustav Holst (1874 – 1934) was an English composer, arranger, and teacher. Best known for his orchestral suite The Planets and his two suites for military band, he composed many other works across a range of genres. A shy man, he did not welcome fame, and preferred to be left in peace to compose and teach. In his later years his uncompromising, personal style of composition struck many music lovers as too austere, and his popularity declined. Nevertheless, he was an important influence on a number of younger English composers.
