The Tanglefoot Rag
Frank H. Losey (1872–1931)
SATB or AATB Saxophone Quartet
The Tanglefoot Rag by F. H. Losey arranged for SATB or AATB saxophone quartet. F. H. Losey is more famous today for his marches and large scale band and orchestral arrangements, but this bouncy number demonstrates his versatility as a ragtime composer. This rag has a lively melody and brings to mind the works of Joplin, Scott, and Lamb. It is written in a classic ragtime form with an introduction then AABBAA (Trio) CCDD layout.
This transcription of The Tanglefoot Rag for Sax Quartet S/AATB is in the original key. The piece works equally well with soprano or alto sax playing lead. There are parts included for both. Soprano and alto saxes trade the main melody back and forth. The tenor fills in with countermelodies while the bass line played by the bari provides a foundation for all.
