About the Composer

Georg Philipp Telemann portrait. Composer of Sonata in F Minor and hundreds of other works.Georg Philipp Telemann (1681-1767). German composer Georg Philipp Telemann was one of the most famous composers in Europe during his lifetime, as well as being one of the most prolific. He built an international career based on fashionable music which he designed for widespread public consumption. He contributed to all the major genres of his day—vocal as well as instrumental, from the liturgical to the theatrical.

Telemann’s modern reputation bears little resemblance to the international fame he enjoyed during his lifetime. To some historians the sheer quantity of his output suggested that his work had to be of poorer quality than that other composers. Modern editions of his music and accurate information about his life have dispelled that idea and allowed a reassessment of Telemann’s artistry. His work is now as esteemed as his German contemporaries, Bach and Handel.
