Quartet 6 in B flat Major, K.159 (1773)
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
SATB Saxophone Quartet
Quartet 6 in B flat Major, K. 159 by Mozart, string quartet transcription for saxophone quartet SATB. This quartet is the next-to-last of a set called the “Milanese Quartets”, so called because Mozart wrote them while he was staying in Milan. The Milanese Quartets (K. 155-160) are the first set of string quartets composed by Mozart. All six quartets have only three movements with the finales usually a lightweight minuet or rondo. The Quartet 6 in B flat major is the fifth of these youthful works. Before writing more string quartets Mozart was influenced by Haydn’s Op. 17 and Op. 20 quartets and adopted a more mature form. The three movements of this quartet are:
I. Andante
II. Allegro assai
III. Allegro grazioso
