Prelude and Fugue in F, 1794 – 1795
Ludwig van Beethoven, (1770- 1827)
SATB Saxophone Quartet
Prelude and Fugue in F by Beethoven, string quartet transcription for saxophone quartet SATB. Prelude and Fugue in F, H30 (Hess catalog) was written as an exercise in four part writing when Beethoven was a counterpoint student with Georg Albrechtsberger. Beethoven made great progress under Albrechtsberger’s guidance during the years 1794-95. In many ways the works Beethoven produced during this period are preliminary studies for the Opus 18 string quartets he wrote later. (A complete SATB transcription of Quartet 1, Op. 18, No 1 is available here). This piece was not published during Beethoven’s life.
