Little Fugue in G Minor

Johann Sebastian Bach (1685-1750)

SATB Saxophone Quartet

Fugue in G minor BWV 578 by Johann Sebastian Bach arranged for SATB Saxophone Quartet. Fugue in G minor BWV 578 is one of the best known fugues by J. S. Bach. It is popularly known as the “Little Fugue”. Early editors of Bach’s work used this title to distinguish it from the later Great Fantasia and Fugue in G minor, BWV 542, which is much longer. Fugue in G minor BWV 578 was written early in composer’s career, most likely while Bach was an organist in Arnstadt around 1707.

Although referred to as the “Little Fugue” you should not underestimate its quality or intensity. The fugue subject is one of Bach’s most recognizable melodies. Typical of Bach, the development of the fugue is masterful. This SATB sax quartet arrangement of the Fugue in G minor BWV 578 shows off each player as the counterpoint is developed and moves towards its climax and conclusion.
