Bagatelle by Anton Dvořák arranged for SAB saxophone trio with piano. The Opus 47 Bagatelles were composed in 12 days at the beginning of May 1878, which was in many ways Dvorák’s “big year” in terms of international success with the publication of his first set of Slavonic Dances and other works by the German publisher Simrock. However, the Bagatelles were very much aimed at the amateur market. The scoring – two violins, cello, and harmonium or piano – is flexible, the main theme of the set is a well known Czech folk tune (Hrály dudy), and only a few flights for the first violin and cello would challenge well-practiced amateurs.

This short (4 minute) allegro takes the form of a lively Czech dance with with a somewhat slower and lyrical middle section. It is in 2/4 throughout. It is in the original keys of E minor/G major. The keyboard/piano part is intermediate-to-upper intermediate level. It serves primarily as a chamber music partner rather than a flashy soloist, balancing chords and rhythmic support against the trio.

About the Composer

Antonín Leopold Dvořák (8 September 1841 – 1 May 1904) From a humble background, with the support of his family and hard work, by his late 30s, Dvořák became one of the most successful composers of his time. He wrote in nearly every genre: Symphonies, chamber music, opera, tone poems, church music, songs, and more. He has been described as “arguably the most versatile…composer of his time”.
