Air – Saxophone Solo (1902)

Jean Huré (1887 - 1930)

Any Saxophone with Piano - Includes B-flat and E-flat solo parts

Air by Jean Huré, arranged for any saxophone solo with piano.  Jean Huré was a  French composer and organist of the early 20th century. His music is mostly unknown today. He was one of the composers commissioned by Elise Hall to create works for saxophone. He wrote several but as with his other works, they have fallen into obscurity. This short piece simply titled ‘Air’ was originally composed for cello and dedicated to Pablo Casals.

“Air” is a short (around 4 minutes) single movement work that presents the saxophone in a singing, lyrical role. It is in 4/4 throughout and taken at a very relaxed pace. It is rhythmically straightforward. The challenge this piece offers is in delivering the melody in an expressive, lyrical manner.

This arrangement is for ANY saxophone solo with piano. B-flat and E-flat parts are included.

  • The range for each saxophone part is shown below.

About the Composer

Jean Hure, composer of Air in F major arranged for any saxophone soloJean Huré (Sept. 17, 1877 – Jan. 27, 1930) was a French organist and composer. Although he had formal education at a monastery, much of his musical knowledge was self-taught. After some musical instruction in Angers, Huré was advised by teachers to study at the Paris Conservatory, but he much preferred to find his own way. He made his living in Paris as an organist at several churches. In addition to writing several works for organ, Huré also wrote an opera, a handful of symphonic works, and several chamber works, including this Air (originally for cello). Huré dedicated this piece, which was written around 1902 to the cellist, Pablo Casals. He was one of the composers commissioned by Elise Hall to create works for saxophone.
