About the Composer

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (7 May 1840 – 6 November 1893) was a Russian composer whose works included symphonies, concertos, operas, ballets, and chamber music. He was the first Russian composer whose music made a lasting impression internationally. Tchaikovsky wrote some of the most popular concert and theatrical music in the classical repertoire.

Tchaikovsky was born in Votkinsk, a small town in the Russian Empire. From an early age he displayed exceptional musical ability. After he completed training as a civil servant, Tchaikovsky persuaded his father that music was his future and he began composition lessons with Anton Rubinstein in 1861. Within 15 years he had become Russia’s leading composer.
