Prelude and Fugue in G Minor (1740)

from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2, No. 16, BWV 885

J. S. Bach (1695-1750)

SATB Saxophone Quartet

Prelude and Fugue in G Minor from The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 2, No. 16, BWV 885 by J. S. Bach arranged for SATB Saxophone Quartet. The prelude is intense, somber, and serious. The slow largo tempo and the insistent dotted rhythm in this prelude seems to expand time. Bach reinforces this through tied dissonances and surprising harmonic steps. It is one of only three instances throughout the 48 Preludes and Fugues of the two-book collection in which Bach indicated a tempo.

The four voice fugue which follows initiates a spectacular game of double invertible counterpoint. With this device, the positions of voices, in terms of register, are reversed, with a higher voice emerging in the lower register, and vice versa. Subject and countersubject blend to form an expression of ever-intensifying euphoria.

About the Composer

Portrait of JS Bach, composer of Prelude and Fugue in G Minor, BWV 885Johann Sebastian Bach, (born March 31 , 1685, Eisenach, Thuringia, [Germany]—died July 28, 1750, Leipzig), composer of the Baroque era, the most celebrated member of a large family of north German musicians.

Admired by his contemporaries primarily as an outstanding harpsichordist, organist, and expert on organ building, Bach is now generally regarded as one of the greatest composers of all time and is celebrated as the creator of the Brandenburg Concertos, The Well-Tempered Clavier, the Mass in B Minor, and numerous other masterpieces of church and instrumental music. During his lifetime, Bach was better known as an organist than a composer. Few of his works were even published during his lifetime. Still Bach’s musical compositions were admired by those who followed in his footsteps, including Amadeus Mozart and Ludwig van Beethoven.
