Petites Musiques
Florent Schmitt (1870 – 1958)
SATB Saxophone Quartet
Petites Musiques, Op. 33 by Florent Schmitt, arranged for saxophone quartet SATB. This work is a transcription of piano pieces by French composer Florent Schmitt. He is one of the many composers of the first half of the 20th century whose music, while important in its day, has fallen into relative obscurity. Schmitt composed several ballets and film scores and a host of vocal, chamber, and keyboard pieces. Saxophone players know him for his Legende, Op. 66 and the Saxophone Quartet, Op. 102.
The 7 movements in this transcription display a wide variety of moods. Some are lyrical with very gentle harmonies and some are rhythmic and full of surprising dissonances.
